Politics
Ick, I just made the mistake of reading the transcript of Palin's talk at the RNC last night. I know, I know, political speech, but wow. Seriously wow. Outright lies and slanders. Palin's speech on comes off dripping with hypocrisy. I can't believe Republicans are dumb enough to fall for that garbage, but they are. As a little-l libertarian it is really depressing. And yes, I know it is a speech to her base, meant to fire them up, and politicians as a whole could care less about truth, but still, I wish we could get an honest one, a forthright one, one with actual principles, just once.

I wonder if McCain's speech tonight will be any better... and it's funny how this election has turned into PALIN!! vs. Obama!. Isn't it kind of bad news if the media cares more about your VP pick than your POTUS pick?

If it were legal, maybe the RNC would do better to make it a Palin/McCain ticket.

This post was next to a Republican friend of mine's post about the things she likes and dislikes about Palin - including how much she liked Palin's speech! ACK! I can generally be polite in talking politics with her - but your comments are SO much closer to where I am. Thank you for your post.

I mean, what is this, a high school election? "Here's my story about why I'm popular, now vote for me." Uh, I'm not going to vote for you based on personality, especially when you ban books and don't believe in global warming. Jesus, this woman would be statistically likely to become president, given McCain's age- how f-ing scary is that! I'm not crazy about any of them, given their lack of addressing the most important issue of all- the environmental destruction of the planet and consequently, ourselves (or at least our children). How can we give a whiny shit about gas prices when we think about that? However, the Republican ticket has me even more terrified for Eli's future.

Finally, someone criticizing Palin for her policies and not her tits. We need more people doing this.

(Not her tits specifically, but the fact that she's the kind of person who has them.)

there were a number of things she said about her opponents, I'm not interested in going back and reading her talk again to give the exact spot that made me throw my hands up in disgust, heh. :)

It's the usual bullshit the Republicans do every election cycle, they are slime and sleaze purveyors when it comes to politics, which I find particularly objectionable, because what I care about are the actual positions and issues. Sadly that's not what gets people elected, so we don't actually see real political speeches anymore. I don't long for the culture we had 75-200 years ago, but I do long for political speech that was actually about what, why, and how.

Sincerity matters a lot to me too. I disagree with the Democrats over a ton of issues, but at least I feel they are generally sincere rather than opportunistic. The Republican party on the other hand has failed to hew to any of its economic principles, which are the ones I theoretically like the party for, while pandering to the religious right on the social issues which is where they and I part ways massively.

Sadly as a libertarian, I have no party that represents my views well, and thus have no stake in the elections since both parties fail massively to deliver on what I want. Theoretically a moderate Republican who was socially liberal and fiscally responsible would most closely match my views, but even if one existed (they apparently vanished over 20 years ago now, sigh), they would fail in many important respects.

Meh, ok, that's enough writing about politics, it just gets my blood pressure up and makes me unhappy, which is why I usually do my best to avoid reading political speeches these days. :)

i can understand your view. but totally disagree about dems being any more sincere than the gop. obama's the guy yelling change in washington the loudest and saying he'll only take public funds, but as soon as he saw how much $ he could fundraise from special interest, he turned down the public funds. so much for change. the kennedy, clinton, obama era is all about fundraising - it's not even transparent. the dems do the same opportunistic stuff as the gop, but they do it with ivy league charm.

if you really want your blood pressure to rise, just for grins ;) , check out all the shit biden has supported over the years - he has a 'wonderful' track record of supporting a tax of the internet (which doesn't affect his constituency in delaware that has no sales tax), anti-encription, opposing peer-to-peer networks, and inserting the government as plaintiff in lawsuits where individuals should be (ala the RIAA) (he's not unlike other dems over the years who have fully supported censorship via the pmrc). opportunistic? absolutely, biden has even plagerized once or twice in his various candidacy stints.

fortunately or unfortunately (depending on your view) politics by nature is opportunistic - it's inherently capitalistic.

no, definitely not reading any more political speeches any time soon, I don't need the ulcer. Like I said, little-l libertarian, the democrats are unacceptable to me as well, they love all sorts of policies that attack freedoms I consider fundamental. Their only win is that in comparison to the anti-choice, fiscally irresponsible, and demonstrably incompetent republicans, they don't look so bad. But really, that's saying a tick is less disgusting than a tapeworm... heh.
