SoCal Tough Mudder [28 Feb 2012|08:32pm]
[ mood | amused ]

I ran another Tough Mudder this weekend, down in southern California, in Temecula. It was really hard, and exhausting, and fun. We completed the 11.5 mile course in 4 hours and 55 minutes, I made it all the way across the monkey bar obstacle without falling, Jen and I both made it over the quarter pipe obstacle on our first try. The leap off a raised platform into the water pit was the longest fall I've ever taken and it was scary (not an impressive distance to high divers, only about 19 feet) but I did it. :) The electrical shock obstacles were the worst ever, 3 shocks on the ECT obstacle at the end, stronger than any I've taken before, and the new crawling electrical shock one was awful, only one shock but it slammed my entire torso.

Looks like we will sign up for the next NorCal one at Northstar. :)

It is amazing how the easy sharing of links on Facebook clobbers a large portion of what drove me to post on livejournal. Well that and I have WAY more friends actively reading my Facebook feed at this point.

Midnight showings... [21 Apr 2011|11:19am]
[ mood | amused ]

Ok, so I love going to the midnight openings of movies. This is partially due to my late night person biases, partially due to in the old days wanting to see the film the first time it went through the projector, before it acquired dirt and scratches and the like, and partially due to the general fun of making an event out of a movie opening, waiting on line, gathering a group of friends to attend with, etc.

Movie theatres have clearly responded to the demand for midnight openings, but perhaps things have gone a little too far. Tonight at my favorite theatre, the following three movies are having midnight openings:

African Cats
"An epic true story set against the backdrop of one of the wildest places on Earth, "African Cats" captures the real-life love, humor and determination of the majestic kings of the savanna. The story features Mara, an endearing lion cub who strives to grow up with her mother's strength, spirit and wisdom; Sita, a fearless cheetah and single mother of five mischievous newborns; and Fang, a proud leader of the pride who must defend his family from a once banished lion."

Water for Elephants
"During the Great Depression, Jacob, a penniless and recently-orphaned veterinary school student, parlays his expertise with animals into a job with a second-rate traveling circus. He falls in love with Marlena, one of the show's star performers, but their romance is complicated by Marlena's husband, the charismatic but unbalanced circus boss."

Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family
"When Madea's niece, Shirley, receives distressing news about her health, all she wants is to gather her three adult children around her and share the news as a family. But Tammy, Kimberly and Byron are too distracted by their own problems: Tammy can't manage her unruly children or her broken marriage; Kimberly is gripped with anger and takes it out on her husband; and Byron, after spending two years in jail, is under pressure to deal drugs again. It's up to Madea, with the help of the equally rambunctious Aunt Bam, to gather the clan together and make things right the only way she knows how: with a lot of tough love, laughter -- and the revelation of a long-buried family secret."

Hmmm... I have to say that out of those, only the Tyler Perry one seems like it might make sense. Perhaps this is just snobbishness on my part since my midnight outing love was grown around summer blockbusters, but I don't really see those three films as the sort that drive big crowds to line up hours ahead of time for a midnight start.

I deleted some folks from my friends list that didn't have reciprocal friend links. Hmm. Looking at my list, lj does seem mostly dead. I myself am fairly terrible at updating on here much these days.

Census Meme [09 Mar 2011|01:21pm]
[ mood | cheerful ]

2011: Living in a 2 bedroom duplex with my awesome housemate (and best friend) [info]calyel

2001: Living in an apartment in Campbell, California, with [info]lching333 being there an awful lot of the time.

1991: Living at home in the summer, still with my brother and parents, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but the bulk of the year was spent in Oberlin, Ohio, away at college. The first part of 91 I was living in Keep Co-Op, basically cohabitating with [info]monkeequeen. The end of the year I was theoretically living in French House, but I spent every night at [info]monkeequeen's offcampus house.

1981: Living with my parents and brother in our first house in Weston, Connecticut.

1971: Depending on what part of the year, I didn't exist yet, or I was living inside of my mom, just getting started on growing seriously.

1961: I was not yet born.

GDC, snowboarding, exercise [08 Mar 2011|11:19am]
[ mood | happy ]

Last week was GDC. I took a fair amount of notes from the sessions, have to figure out if I am going to try and write them up or not. I found the panels and lectures that I went to to be good, a worthwhile use of time. I really enjoyed participating in the Free to Play, Pay for Stuff roundtable, I'm looking forward to hopefully having new information to contribute soon. I figured out what I am going to pitch a GDC talk about for next year, hopefully I can finally get to give one. :)

I had a fantastic time seeing old friends, catching up on their lives, both in and out of work. Lots of good meals and interesting discussions. I got to hang out with folks I respect that I've developed professional friendships with through years of attending GDC and actively participating in discussions. Definitely one of the benefits of the roundtable format.

Wednesday night was a dinner outing that Seth organized with a bunch of old buddies from the GT days. It was really nice hanging out with so many old friends who I don't see enough (especially the ones who are local, Marin is disturbingly far from the south bay). Thursday I had dinner with Sulka and Eyjolfur and we had a fascinating conversation of many aspects of managing the economies of MMOs, from technology to process, then I met up with Ming and hung out at The View (awesome view bar on top of the Marriot) for the evening chatting about life, games and girls. Friday Jason and I hung out with Alice after GDC had wrapped, then the two of us had a really tasty sushi dinner outing to Ozumo in SF, before I dropped him at the airport, it is nice getting to spend time with friends you've had for many years. Lunches gave me lots of chances to see friends from Wizards like Paul and Greg.

I had some great conversations with people I worked with at various companies on the Expo floor, got to hang out with [info]lching333, and the whole experience was totally worth the money and time spent. I'm looking forward to GDC2012. I am sad that I didn't manage to see Damion.

The weekend was spent in Tahoe with some old Cryptic coworkers and their friends. We stuffed 5 people into a motel room saturday night, which was nice from a keeping it inexpensive standpoint. More delicious sushi was had, it was fun meeting some new folks, and the boarding was fun. I like my new boots, and now I am worrying that the discomfort I am having is from my bindings rather than my boots. ARGH. I had a lot more control, which was nice, but I am definitely only at a working my way through blues level at the moment. No black diamonds for me this trip.

Climbing last night at the gym was great, I did some more challenging stuff, sent the 10d that I've been working on, and added my friend Ylia to our climbing group. Good times. This morning I was up at the crack of dawn for another workout with Leyla. I'm enjoying the exercise, but oy, I need to improve faster for the rapidly approaching Tough Mudder Socal.

So, crazy busy with activities, having lots of fun, super tired. Heh. I need a vacation to recuperate from all of this.

Oh yeah work is going great, we had some very successful work done on the first two days last week before I went off to GDC, which was nice, and coming back from it all, Monday felt quite productive.

30 day game lj meme [05 Jan 2011|04:25pm]
[ mood | awake ]

And here we are finishing up the meme in sync with [info]aniline

Day 29 - A game you thought you wouldn't like, but ended up loving.

Hmm, I'm sure there must be something, but I can't really remember. Like [info]aniline I did think Angry Birds sounded uninteresting from the reviews of it, but then found it compelling after playing it for a bit. But I've not sprung for the full version so... It is a tough one to fill in since I rarely pick up games that I expect I won't enjoy.

Day 30 - Your favorite game of all time

We're sticking with the assumption this means video games, otherwise D&D 3.5 would probably have to take the crown. For sheer number of hours of my life spent on it, World of Warcraft seems the clear winner here, even though I'm no longer playing and have no plans to play it again. For longevity of active play, MOO II wins since I've been playing it multiple times a year since 1995.

Day 1 - Very first video game.
Day 2 - Your favorite character.
Day 3 - A game that is underrated.
Day 4 - Your guilty pleasure game.
Day 5 - Game character you feel you are most like (or wish you were).
Day 6 - Most annoying character.
Day 7 - Favorite game couple.

[ mood | cheerful ]

catching up with [info]aniline
Day 25 - A game you plan on playing.

But presumably have not yet? I'm eagerly anticipating Mass Effect 3.

Day 26 - Best voice acting.

Bioware's been doing a fantastic job. I'm hard pressed to pick one out from Dragon Age, KotOR, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2...

Day 27 - Most epic scene ever.

Hmm, the space battle at the end of Mass Effect was pretty amazing and gigantic in scope.

Day 28 - Favorite game developer.

From the insider perspective I've really enjoyed all of the developers that I have worked at. PCP&L had serious issues, but I had a lot of fun, especially with [info]lching333. 1Up Studios was our own company so that was incredibly special as an experience, Wizards of the Coast was amazing to work at, despite the ridiculous bureaucracy, shipping Champions Online for Cryptic and then the first 5 months of live was a completely new experience, and I'm having a lot of fun at Gazillion.

From the perspective of a player, I guess sadly it is Bioware that I'm always interested in what game they are doing next. Other than that I'm not sure I track any games by studio...

Continuing video game meme [29 Dec 2010|04:42pm]
[ mood | hungry ]

Day 22 - A game sequel which disappointed you.

KotOR 2

It shipped less than a year after the first one came out, and was clearly rushed and unfinished as evidenced by the voice acting files that were on disc for a much better ending than the one it came with.

Day 23 - Game you think had the best graphics or art style.

I really liked the look of the original Wipeout when it came out on the PSX. It was directly targeted at my design sensibilities, it was perfectly tailored to my taste at the time. :)

Day 24 - Favorite classic game.

Adventure, I think, if by classic video game we mean first gen consoles. My favorite arcade game was probably Gaplus (also known as Galaga 3).

Hey [info]aniline, what day are we supposed to be on??

Day 20 - Favorite genre.

RPG, RTS, 4x Strategy are all pretty high up there. Sheer number of hours played WoW wins so that's MMORPG, but I don't really intend to spend that much time on an MMORPG again... Over the course of my life 4x strategy games (Reach For The Stars, Masters of Orion II and the Civilization series) have eaten the most additional time.

Day 21 - Game with the best story.

Hmm, the original KotOR drew me into the game world completely, as did Mass Effect. I guess I have a slight preference for KotOR out of those.

Day 16 - Game with the best cut scenes.

Hard to pick out one game as best, but I really liked Mass Effect's story... but that was perhaps more of an artifact of being integral to it, as opposed to the cut scenes being better than any other game... I felt similarly about KotOR six years ago.

Everybody? That's rather loaded. I'm not sure I think any particular game is right for everybody to play. Just because I love something doesn't mean it is right for every other person I know, let alone the entire world.

Masters of Orion II. I've been playing it ever since it came out in 1995. I keep a copy on my current computer and move it over whenever I upgrade. :) It still runs well.

Day 10 - Best gameplay

Best gameplay is a really tough one because games are so different from one another that it is essentially impossible to compare except within a relatively tight genre, where you can have an idea of a particular game experience you want to have to use as a ranking mechanism.

I've been thinking about this one for a while and I don't really feel like there is a perfect example to pluck out of the air, even with all the games I've loved over the years. They all generally have room for improvement, things that could be better even if they are awesome. If I absolutely had to pick one, I guess Masters of Orion II (which will come up again later) is the one that I feel epitomizes good gameplay for me.

Day 9 - Saddest game scene.

Not exactly saddest but it seems to fit the intent, the most emotionally powerful scene I've ever played in a video game was in the original KotOR. I hit a point where it seemed obvious that there was a Light Side/Dark Side choice, perhaps the last one for the game, so I saved my game before making my Light Side choice, since Ahndie was an incredibly good and honorable Jedi. Then after playing on for a bit, I went back and loaded up the save game to try out what I assumed would be the dark side path. It was. I turned to the dark side, and because I had leveled up Force Persuade I was able to make Zaalbar the Wookie execute Mission, the teenage girl that I had rescued from the slums.

It was awful, it felt so incredibly evil and was deeply upsetting to play. It was incredible that a game could help create those feelings, and I think is one of the high point accomplishments of our industry. This was art, without a doubt.

Day 8 - Best Soundtrack

The original Wipeout for the PSX. That was perfectly targeted at me. Great music to fly a racer to.

Day 7 - Favorite game couple.

My female Shepard from Mass Effect and Liara T'Soni. I enjoyed the romance plots in KotOR as well, but the quality of the story and voice acting in Mass Effect plus the fact it is more recent in my memory put it over the top.

Day 6 - Most annoying character.

Hmm, nothing that has stuck with me really. Character implies voice acting/writing/character design, and I'm hard pressed to think of any game that I've played with strong characters where they were painful. Generally the most annoying character for me are ones with bad AI, like my hero in Dragon Age who liked to run off and aggro entirely different rooms than the one we were already fighting in. Go figure.
